Celtian is a symphonic folk metal project started in 2017 by Diego Palacio (ex-Mägo de Oz flautist) and composed nowadays of Xana Lavey (vocals), Diego Palacio (whistle, transverse flute, bagpipes), Txus Borao (violin, bouzouki), David Landeroin (drums), Sergio Culebras (guitar) and Raúl Plaza (bass).

After a debut album based on traditional Irish music, at the end of 2018 the band incorporated Xana Lavey as their singer and, after some changes in the line-up, went on to produce their first professional album, with songs of their won, called En Tierra de Hadas (Maldito Records). The public’s favourable response led the videoclip of their “Niamh” single to reach half a million visits in less than four months. In June 2021, Celtian published their third album, Senda de Leyenda (Maldito Records), which received great response in Spain and South America, establishing the band on the national and international scene.

Celtian’s sound is characterized by a mixture of the strength of metal’s guitars, bass and drums and the flutes, bagpipes and violins of Celtic music. This is supported by orchestrations and keyboards and a voice that is sweeter and more melodic than what is usually found in metal. The Celtic essence is a key part of this style, which helps to the band’s reception in environments outside of rock.

The fantastic human communication: the sung voice

It implies the exceptionality of human communication not only at a conversational level, but also related to the marvellous creation of an own musical language, with everything that this entails at different levels.

In Tolkien’s world, music takes us to reality’s obscure aspects with magical sounds where the harmonious spheres work as one. Similarly, Glirhuin, aided by his Elven harp, will show us those hidden places through a selection of space in The Lord of the Rings where music, much as magic, pervades it all.

In the first chapter of The Silmarillion, J.R.R. Tolkien describes the myth of creation by means of the Music of the Ainur. The Ainulindalë tells of how Eru, the God creator, proposes the Ainur, offspring of his mind, to play together a song that will lay the bases for the creation of Eä, the formation of Arda, and the coming of the Children of Ilúvatar; a song to which each Ainur will contribute with a part of themselves to enrich it and make it grow. This evocative tale that focuses on musical expression, and the duality of harmony and discordance raises an inevitable question: what would that original music, which had to simultaneously create and express divine order, sound like? The present talk will first analyse the idea of creation in the professor’s mythology and present, afterwards, a personal musical interpretation of this music of creation, a combination of the different personalities and voices of the Ainur, in the form of an original piece of music based on the study of this little explored chapter of Tolkien’s work. We will try to bring literature to life by means of music.
