Paul Urkijo’s Irati shined bright in last year’s 33rd Horror and Fantasy Film Festival of San Sebastián, proclaiming itself as a unique work that succeeded in bringing back that fantasy genre that feels nostalgic about cloaks and swords, as well as showcasing the magic that permeates Basque mythology. Other award-winning films included Oldtimers, Alegrías Riojanas, Écorchée, El Semblante, The Debutante, Loop and Unicorn Wars, all of which have contributed to 2023 being an utterly incredible year for all fantasy lovers.

Among everything that Irati teaches us we find the food culture of mythological beings like Tartalo, who, among other things, includes in his diet succulent humans—clothes, boots, cloaks and all—that haven’t even been seasoned with oil or salt.

We don’t want our menu to give us food poisoning, so the culinary world will don its best clothes by the hand of Roberto Cruz Fernández, head chef of NH Hotel Canciller Ayala of Vitoria, who will offer our most exclusive public an elaborate recipe inspired by the greatest fantasy films that will be available in the hotel’s restaurant during “Tartalo. Week of the Fantastic in the Arts”.

The magical realism of Big Fish will be challenged by the sweetness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and with Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea science fiction will take us from the bottom of the ocean to the top of the Empire State Building, a dizzying ride on King Kong’s palm. It might be that after such a trip we don’t recognise the ground we are standing on and, who knows, it is possible that we got lost in a network of intertwined paths that create Pan’s Labyrinth. Nevertheless, a dim light will show us to the exit, which we shall happily cross. Before our eyes, a majestic building will rise and we will come to the realisation that our clumsy steps have led us to the quintessence of gothic horror, Dracula’s castle.
