The Space Alien as a Multitude in Latinx Science Fiction

One of the central claims of my book The Latinx Files: Race, Migration, and Space Aliens is that the cultural figure of the space alien is more fruitfully conceived of as a Multitude rather than an Other. The space alien framed as Other may be helpful in critiquing Anglo-American works of science fiction, but it is less useful when it comes to the space alien in Latinx science fiction. This essay will examine several works of Latinx science fiction to draw out the details of this claim. I will begin by pointing to the multiplicity of allegories and migrations in the graphic art of Lalo Alcaraz. I will examine Tato Laviera’s poem “Puerto Rico’s Chupacabras” which uses depictions of the Chupacabras, both fictional and real, to express various political, philosophical, and cultural perspectives about Puerto Rico. Finally, I will examine Gloria Anzaldúa’s use of the space alien as a central metaphor, and in particular, her concept of the alien consciousness, a way of being that is tolerant of ambiguity, contradiction, and perplexity, and that does not think dualistically but rather embraces multiplicity. The essay ends by investigating the political ramifications of the embodiment of the alien consciousness in Latinx science fiction and the further effects of thinking of the space alien as a Multitude.

Contos da Illa de Man is the first Galician translation of this work by the ethnographer Sophia Morrison in the early twentieth century. These are folktales from the Isle of Man that have been passed down from generation to generation to make sense of their reality. In them, their most common mythological beings appear, with special dedication to small people, who are not to be confused with fairies. The original that was used for this translation was in Anglo-Manx, where Manx Gaelic and English shared space. There are also numerous parts in Manx, especially among fantastic beings.
This book, in addition to magnificent illustrations made in watercolour by Fran López Cierto, includes an introduction to the island and the state of their native language. A language that UNESCO declared extinct and that today has native speakers again.

En 1848 un grupo de siete jóvenes osados e inconformistas, cuatro de ellos menores de edad, abordaron la aventura de crear una sociedad secreta que con la enigmática sigla PRB pretendía firmar cada una de sus provocadoras producciones artísticas. El misterioso significado de esas letras pronto iba a ser desvelado por la indiscreción (o traición) de uno de sus miembros (1). Dichas iniciales aludían a la Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood o Pre-Raphaelite Brethen (“Hermandad Prerrafaelista”), grupo decidido a enfrentarse al gusto imperante dictaminado por el arte académico y defendido por la máxima institución artística del imperio británico: la todopoderosa Royal Academy. Para ello, los prerrafaelistas buscaron su inspiración en tiempos remotos, anteriores a la influencia, para ellos nefasta, ejercida en el arte pictórico occidental por los seguidores del artista renacentista Rafael Sanzio de Urbino (1483 – 1520).

Thery has decided to move to Barcelona. Thanks to her boss, in a few days she will be leaving Santander without warning, as well as Jon and the rest of her co-workers. An introvert with no family, she is going to give herself a new start. Nothing keeps her there anymore, but destiny has a surprise in store for her on her birthday.
Maxt and other strange individuals from the planet Halkibie will enter her life, connecting her to her origins and to a past that haunts her nightmares. Her future, which seemed clear, is now up in the air.
She will have to choose between staying on Earth or travelling to this new world in search of answers. That is, whether she abandons everything and everyone, or embraces a future that, unbeknownst to her, is tied to Jon’s and Maxt’s, and which will place her at the center of a web of conspiracies and grudges of very deep roots.
With both of their help, will she be able to find the answers she needs, or will she succumb to the plotting of Halkibie’s leaders?
